bezocht crash van grootvader
Op 31 maart 1945 stortte een Amerikaans jachttoeste~ neer in de
Meersstraat. De pHoot kon zich redden met zijn vatscherm, waama hij werd
meegenomen door een Canadese z~ekenwagen. Het vliegtuig verdween in de grond,

over dat ongevaL Jarenlang zochten mensen ~n aflerlel dossiers naar informatie
rond deze crash, maar nergens stond er jets over vermeld. Tot zestig jaar later
piloot Dick Smith op eeri vergadering van oud-piloten in Oregon aan Monique
Baert uit Tielt (getrouwd met een oud-piloot) zel dat h~j de piloot was van die
crash. Via haar broer Milo Baert en Gustaaf Stragier (voorzitter Vriendenkring
14-18) werd afles heel viug duidelijk. Er werd zelfs een tijdje overwogen om
het vHegtuig datonder de grond Iigt op het veki van b~oemen Vanacker terug
boven te halen. Zondagvoormiddag kwam de 28-jarige kleindochter Erin Smith uit
Rochester (New York) op bezoek en dit op de p~aats waar het P-51 jachttoeste~
van haar grootvader neerstortte. Ze trok ook naar de p~aats waar grootvader
Smith met~zijn valscherm landde in de Lamrnekensknokstraat. Erin stu~eert
psychologieopvoedkunde aan de Universiteit nabij Kaiserslautern in Duitsiand.
Midden juni reist ze terug af naar Amerika. Ze kwam speciaa~ naar Ingelmunster
om de crashp~aats te bezoeken. Ze werd rondgeIe~d door ~vlnr) Dwk Decuypere
(slagveldarcheoloog), Gustaaf Stragier en Davy Vanacker (zoon van de

AMERICAN VISITS CRASH SITE OF GRANDFATHER INGELMUNSTER
On March 31, 1945 an American fighter airplane crashed in
the Meerstreet.
The pilot managed to parachute out of the plane, and was
picked up by a Canadian ambulance. The airplane disappeared in the ground and
the crater was filled up
The public forgot about it, but for many years some
people searched vainly in all kinds of dossiers for a mention of this plane and
this event
Sixty years later at a VWV2 veterans reunion in Oregon,
Pilot Dick Smith encountered Monique Baert (wife of WVV 2 veteran WIliam Polk)
and told her the story of his crash in Ingelmunster. Monique contacted her
brother Milo (Erniel) Baert of Tielt who contacted Gustaaf Stagier, Chairman of
~Vriendenkring 14-18” and the story of the crash became much clearer. At one
time the possibility of d~gg~ng up the plane ,which is buried under a hothouse
of a flower-growing business uBl~men Vanacker”, was considered.
Sunday morning the 28 year old granddaughter Erin Smith from
Rochester (New York) came to visit the place where the P-Si Fighter plane of
her Grandfather crashed
She also visited the place where her Grandfather with his
parachute landed in the Lammekensknokstreet. Erin studies Psychology-Education
at the University of Kaiserslautem in Germany. Mid June she returns to the
United States. She came especially to Ingelmunster to visit the crash site She
was escorted around the area by (from L to R) by Dirk Decuypere (archivist of
battlefields), Gustaaf Stragier and Davy Vanacker (son of the owner of the
flower business).
